Hero Hounds is more than just a board game. It’s the culmination of four years of development, a rich family history in Beagle Field Trials, and an even longer tradition of hunting dog exhibitions going all the way back to the late nineteenth century.

Hero Hounds: A Passion Project

Joe McVay created Hero Hounds originally as a card game that he called “My Beagle Has Skills”, which he then spent over four years developing into a full board game based off one of his favorite hobbies. His goal was to create a simulation of actual Beagle field trials held across the U.S. and Canada that would allow anyone to experience the thrill of the hunt just as he regularly did with his family.

Hero Hounds does exactly that, bringing the joy and energy of a Beagle pack right into your home.

Rooted in Family Tradition

McVay’s love for the hunt was inspired by his parents, who often went out together to let their beagles hunt both in field trials and just for fun. McVay’s family played a major role in developing much of the present day clubs and field trials held all across North America, even holding an annual memorial hunt in honor of McVay’s father for all of his contributions to the sport.

Hero Hounds is an extension of that passion and family tradition, built on years of experience competing in and judging field trials and raising champion Beagles.

A Brief History of Beagle Field Trials

Beagles have long been a popular breed for hunting and sporting events, even before the first official competitions were held in the late nineteenth century. Their keen sense of smell and excellent agility made them perfect for hunting small creatures like rabbits, while their friendly personality and playful attitudes made them excellent family pets. The first competition held in 1888 in the U.S. helped to show off these energetic little dogs, and the field trials only gained popularity in the country from there.

Today, Beagle Field Trials are more than just hunting: they are a celebration of the unique qualities of the Beagle as a dog breed, bringing together breeders, trainers, hunters, hobbyists, and dog enthusiasts.

Hero Hounds was developed not just to honor this long tradition and unique dog breed, but also to spread the appreciation of Beagles to everyone who plays the game!
